Introduction to Die Walküre by Daniel Freeman

Saturday, March 30, 9 AM – 11 AM

The Metropolitan Opera performs Die Walküre Live in HD on March 30. Join us to watch it at the Showplace Icon Theater!

In what is expected to be a Wagnerian event for the ages, soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, Wotan’s willful warrior daughter who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance. Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek play the incestuous twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan. Philippe Jordan conducts.

Learn more about the production here.

We are again fortunate to have Daniel Freeman, musicologist and lecturer at the University of Minnesota, to speak to us about the opera before the performance. We will hear Daniel’s introduction at 9 AM with coffee and rolls, then proceed to the performance at 11 AM. The Showplace Icon theater has graciously made its conference room available to us.

The performance runs from 11 AM to 4 PM with two intermissions. The Lobby Lounge is open for food and refreshments to those 21 and older. You may place an order for the first intermission before the performance begins.

Purchase your ticket here to Daniel Freeman’s discussion. Purchase your ticket to the performance separately from the Showplace Icon. You should purchase your performance tickets as soon as possible; these often sell out quickly.

For this performance, the Showplace Icon offers two types of tickets:

  • ICON-X: lower level, standard theatre seats with cup holders
  • VIP Reserved ICON-X: balcony, age 21+, adjacent to the lounge, large leather chairs with a table between each pair

Directions

The Showplace Icon Theater is located at 1625 West End Blvd, St. Louis Park, MN 55416. There is a theater parking ramp behind the theater on the west side of Duke Drive. (Do not use the parking ramp on the east side of Duke Drive.) Entry to the theater is on the second level, to the left of the ticket sales desk. You must present your theater ticket to the ticket attendant upon entry. The attendant can direct you to the conference room, which is left down the hallway after you enter. See you there!
